HUSH - 11/17/08 - 11/21/08

Unit 6 Test is Monday, November 17. Please remember to come by my room before school if you need help with any of the material on the test.

We will begin WWII this week and will begin doing research on our decades project. Remember, you will be doing a comprehensive project on all aspects of your assigned decade: political, economic, social, leaders, world affairs, conflicts, cultural trends, and many, many more. One of the assessments will be your use of lab time so please stay focused and don't waste valuable time in the lab. Select partners who will do their fair share!

So far your WWI Newspapers have been excellent! Your articles are thorough, well-written, and the papers are beautifully designed and well organized. Great job!

Unit 6 - Imperialism, World War I, the Twenties, Depression and New Deal

HUSH - 10/13/08 - 10/17/08

This week we will be quickly moving through unit 5. This unit includes the age of Industrialization, Immigration and Urbanization, the transformation of the South and West, the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era. You will be taking quite a few notes on these chapters in class so you will not need your book. You will have outside readings to do at home.

Outside reading selections: Industrialization and Child Labor, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, Social Darwinism, Karl Marx, Ellis Island, Joseph Pullitzer, William Randolph Hearst, Battle of Little Bighorn, Wounded Knee, Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. These will be supplemental articles (to be read at home) for chapters 13 - 17.

Your Civil War Journals are due Monday. Please review the checklist before you submit your journal to be sure you have done everything correctly. Don't forget to include the Reconstruction era. The journals will be half off if they are turned in late!

You should be visiting the Georgia Department of Education website and examining the EOCT study guide. This test counts as 15% of your entire grade and will be here before you know it.

HUSH - 10/6/08 - 10/10/08

Create graphic organizer (p. 373) for section 3 tonight. Due Tuesday.

This week we will continue the Civil War - advantages of each side, strategies, key battles and leaders, Emancipation Proclamation.

Continue working on your Civil War journal which is due Monday, 10/13/08. Each entry should be at least a full page in length. Include historical references in your journal but be sure to link them to your story. In other words, you need to demonstrate that you understand the cause and effect of that event on the country. Please type your journal unless you have very neat handwriting!

Unit test is Friday, Oct. 10. This is a change in the original date!

HUSH - 9/29/08 - 10/3/08

We will continue unit 4 this week: Causes of the Civil War and the Civil War itself. Presentations should be completed by Monday.

Don't forget to begin working on your Civil War Journal. You need a minimum of 10 entries and they should be at least one full page each (typing is preferred). You must incorporate historical facts and relate them to who your "character" is. Don't just list random facts without making the connection to real events in your life as they would have been during that time. Be creative! This is your chance to do some creative as well as historical writing.

Don't forget testing Monday and Tuesday - schedules will be slightly altered.

If you watched the debate Friday night, turn in your summary as soon as possible. October 2 is the first Vice Presidential debate. Be checking on the blue and red states!

HUSH 9/22 - 9/26

TEST TUESDAY UNIT 3 (Sectionalism, Nationalism, Expansion)

Our next unit (4) will cover the causes of the Civil War, the Civil War and Reconstruction. We will be doing a couple of small projects within this unit, one of which will be a Civil War Journal that you will be creating and writing in all throughout the unit. Be prepared to write a lot! You will use fictional characaters but the events must be based on actual historical events.

We will also do a small group project on the fundamental causes of the Civil War. We will also examine Civil War photographs and analyze and interpret them. History through photography!

Don't forget to take the politcal test online and to watch the Presidential Debates 9/26!

Unit 3 - key ideas: Nationalism and Sectionalism, Reform, Westward Movement
Unit covers chapters 7 - 9 so be sure to keep up with your outside reading.

This week - Be sure to keep track (on a chart) of the issues that united our country (nationalism) and the issues that divided our country (sectionalism) in the early 1800's. This will assist you with the essays you will be writing.

Body Biography - DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC - due Monday (end of class). Reminder - dig deep past colonial constitutions, charters and self-government. Remember the Greeks? the Romans? the British? the Enlightenment?

Test Unit 2 is Wednesday (Chapters 5-6) Constitution and Republic.

Study session Wednesday morning if you are interested! Reminder, extended learning sessions are offered at various times each week. Schedule is posted in the room.

HSUS 9/2 - 9/5

This week we will continue with Unit 2 - Constitution and New Republic (see standards in last week's entry). We have discussed the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and the many issues and compromises needed to ratify the Constitution. This week we will examine the new Republic and its many challenges politically, economically and socially. We will examine the lasting precedents of George Washington, the rise of political parties, and examine the causes and results of the War of 1812.

Please finish your Landmark Supreme Court case research and be prepared to share the facts of your case with the class by Wednesday.

On Friday we will work on a project entitled: Body Biography - What is a Democratic Republic?

This week we will examine the Articles of Confederation - What were the weaknesses of the Articles?; the Constitutional Convention - purpose, conflicts (how to create a powerful central government and maintain a republic????), compromises (create a concept web); ratification of the Constitution; Bill of Rights; Supreme Court and landmark cases

This week we continue to investigate the causes of the American Revolution. Remember to focus on the impact of the French and Indian War on British colonial policy.

Columbian Exchange disease research due Monday.

Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a wonderful and restful summer and that you are ready to have a good semester.

We will be covering U.S. History from colonization to modern America this semester. You will have an EOCT exam for this class so I strongly recommend that you go to the EOCT review site listed on your syllabus and either print out the review manual or visit the site frequently throughout the semester. The site provides content review but also contains summaries, test taking strategies, and practice questions.

There will be lots of information to come and I look forward to working with you all this semester!
