         <description><![CDATA[<p>Nov 17 Floriculture<br />
WOW, the week before Thanksgiving break....... the week ahead looks like this<br />
I have graded your PGP & will return them to you on Monday with your resume. We will breifly go over PART II of the project, we will work on this in earnest on Dec 1. Dress warm on Monday we are going out to collect Pine boughs. Each persdon should have a partner and fill 1 large black trash bag.<br />
Tues - Wed we will be making a garland/pine roping, each person will make 5' of roping.<br />
Friday - Spices from around the world!<br />
If you are traveling for the holiday, PLEASE bring back a soil sample or a plant sample from something you did not know what it was.<br />

         <title>Nov 17 General Horticulture</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>Nov 17 General Horticulture<br />
WOW, the week before Thanksgiving! If you are traveling for the holiday, PLEASE bring back soil. It makes our collection  more interesting!! The week ahead, we will  be  working on a resume and cover letter. I will cover the topic and give plenty of examples. I have an information packet (the one that the guidance dept. uses for seniors) that needs to be filled out. In class, each student should have made a rough draft. We will be going to the computer lab on Thursday to type your resume & cover letter.  The resume & cover letter will be due at the end of class on Thursday. I will review them & return them. If corrections need to be made, grades will be given AFTER corrections are made & resumes returned. Corrections are DUE ON FRIDAY NOV 21. They will not be accepted after Nov 21. <br />
Friday we look at spices from around the world.<br />
Have wonderfull Thanksgiving break, eat,rest & spend time people you care about.<br />

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Nov 10 Floriculture<br />
This week consists of a lot of odds & ends..................Monday review Resume requirements, if you have that from a previous Hort class, life is good. You need to update it and print it. If you do not have one, cann't find it etc. we will be going to the computer lab on Tuesday. Some suggestions, you may want to email your resume to yourself so you can access it from school/home.<br />
Wednesday - Friday we will be working on Okra Santas, pine cones for the holidays and pine roping.<br />
Please bring in some pine cones appx 6-10 per person.<br />
Please take your pumpkin centerpieces home and out of the pot shed!<br />
No PGPs are excepted after Friday 11-7-08 unless it is an excused absence.<br />

We begin our soils unit this week, which is chapter 6 in the text book. We will learn about the compents of soil, structure & texture, erosion and nutrients needed for plant growth. We have a guided reading and a worksheet. We shall walk several areas of campus to collect some soil samples, please dress accordingly. We will have a quiz over Seasonal Color and Soils eithert Friday or Monday.<br />

We are completeing our unit on tree identification!! The week ahead looks like this:<br />
Monday: Collect samples of:Leyland Cypress, White Oak, Dawn Redwood, Az. Cypress & Zelkova<br />
Tuesday: Id test # 1 it will not cover the trees we did on Monday<br />
Wednesday:28 day PGP obsservations, mount samples collected on Monday<br />
Thursday: Collect remaining samples: Fosters Holly, Tulip Poplar & Fosters Holly. Discuss plant Hardiness & Climate zones<br />
Friday: Press remaining plant samples & Invent -A- Plant<br />
Please go for a walk, hike etc. Enjoy the trees as they turn color, use your new found knowledge to ID them with the common and botanical name. Have fun, it is rewarding!!!<br />

We will be working on The history of Floriculture (chap 2) this week. We are going to continue with our last leaf art project. We will use fabric paint  & leaves to make an impression on a T-shirt, sweat shirt or hand towel.<br />
Students need to bring in at least 1 item to work with on MONDAY! Please wash the item at home and remember lighter colored fabrics work best. <br />

We are still working on our Tree Identification this week. Please review your plants & plant "flash cards" often.<br />
Most importantly go and take a walk, hike Kennesaw Mt., look around! The trees in our area are starting to turn colors and look amazing!!!<br />
Many of students did not have their photo ID books, they lost 5 pts on their work ethics grade and are now behind. Please have all of your materials together for this week.<br />

All of our physical projects are now behind us! We will begin our Fall Wreath  or dried arrangement project on Monday. This involves a grape vine wreath, leaves,ornaments and yes a bow. We will learn to tie a bow this week. This fall wreath should take us a week to complete.Please be pateint as their are a lot of you and one of me!<br />

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Oct 6 General Horticulture<br />
We will begin our new unit on tree identification! This is the best time of the year to ID trees as they will turn amazing colors. It is very rewarding to be able to identify them! Students will work a partner . We will collect 30 samples in class and press them. Then we will mount the in  a photo ablum with the plant sample on one side and the information sheet on the other, a giant flash card! Students will take 2 ID tests and turn in their notebook collection for a grade. We will work on this for appx. 3 weeks. We did operate some equipment last week and will blend ID & equipment together. Please be prepared to outside and collect samples or operate equipment. Please have shoes and a jacket/sweatshirt as it is cool in the mornings. If you have any comments or concerns please contact me. Thanks, Mrs. Hutmacher<br />
