WOW, the week before Thanksgiving! If you are traveling for the holiday, PLEASE bring back soil. It makes our collection more interesting!! The week ahead, we will be working on a resume and cover letter. I will cover the topic and give plenty of examples. I have an information packet (the one that the guidance dept. uses for seniors) that needs to be filled out. In class, each student should have made a rough draft. We will be going to the computer lab on Thursday to type your resume & cover letter. The resume & cover letter will be due at the end of class on Thursday. I will review them & return them. If corrections need to be made, grades will be given AFTER corrections are made & resumes returned. Corrections are DUE ON FRIDAY NOV 21. They will not be accepted after Nov 21.
Friday we look at spices from around the world.
Have wonderfull Thanksgiving break, eat,rest & spend time people you care about.

We begin our soils unit this week, which is chapter 6 in the text book. We will learn about the compents of soil, structure & texture, erosion and nutrients needed for plant growth. We have a guided reading and a worksheet. We shall walk several areas of campus to collect some soil samples, please dress accordingly. We will have a quiz over Seasonal Color and Soils eithert Friday or Monday.

We are completeing our unit on tree identification!! The week ahead looks like this:
Monday: Collect samples of:Leyland Cypress, White Oak, Dawn Redwood, Az. Cypress & Zelkova
Tuesday: Id test # 1 it will not cover the trees we did on Monday
Wednesday:28 day PGP obsservations, mount samples collected on Monday
Thursday: Collect remaining samples: Fosters Holly, Tulip Poplar & Fosters Holly. Discuss plant Hardiness & Climate zones
Friday: Press remaining plant samples & Invent -A- Plant
Please go for a walk, hike etc. Enjoy the trees as they turn color, use your new found knowledge to ID them with the common and botanical name. Have fun, it is rewarding!!!

We are still working on our Tree Identification this week. Please review your plants & plant "flash cards" often.
Most importantly go and take a walk, hike Kennesaw Mt., look around! The trees in our area are starting to turn colors and look amazing!!!
Many of students did not have their photo ID books, they lost 5 pts on their work ethics grade and are now behind. Please have all of your materials together for this week.

We will begin our new unit on tree identification! This is the best time of the year to ID trees as they will turn amazing colors. It is very rewarding to be able to identify them! Students will work a partner . We will collect 30 samples in class and press them. Then we will mount the in a photo ablum with the plant sample on one side and the information sheet on the other, a giant flash card! Students will take 2 ID tests and turn in their notebook collection for a grade. We will work on this for appx. 3 weeks. We did operate some equipment last week and will blend ID & equipment together. Please be prepared to outside and collect samples or operate equipment. We are wrapping up our plant propagation unit this week. We will review on Monday & Tuesday. The target test day is Wednesday. That may difficult with more testing this week. So the test may be on Thursday. Regurdless....
students need to review ALL materials on plant propagation, handouts, chapter 5 and ALL flash cards from the beginning of the semester. Hope fully, we will spend 2 days this week on euipment if I can get gas to fill up the gas cans..................that is proving to be a challenge!

WOW! we have spent ALOT of time on Basic Botany,Careers, College stuff and did the 5 senses demo lab. We have made flash cards for vocab, organized your class notebook. You should be working on the BASIC BOTANY CD/ALBUM Cover review project. It will be due on Tuesday.
If you have already finished and would like to turn it in on Monday that is fine. The week looks like this..
Monday: Basic Botany Review as a class and if time permits you will be able to work on your review CD/Album cover.
Tuesday: TEST! It will cover Basic Botany,Careers, College stuff and did the 5 senses demo lab.
The TEST, this will require you to THINK and APPLY what you have learned and what you know. It will challenge you I promise. PLEASE study, review notes, flash cards and anything that we colored!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wed-Friday: We begin a new unit on PROPAGATION i! Yea, getting closer to working in the GH.

Tuesday: Lab finals, these are physical assignments drawn at random and to be performed as a group. All lab rules apply. Pleaase be prepared. Senior Finals 2 & 3

Welcome back from Spring Break! Ihope everyone is rested and ready to finish up the semester. Before Spring Break we had an issue of missing money in 2nd period. Money is missing from 2 different students and it is a lot of money. It was from prom. If you know anything PLEASE let me know. This is very distrubing that people are unable to trust one another......
We begin our unit on Plant ID this week. If you have not brought in your photo album please do so now, this has been discussed since January. We will collect & press plant samples and place them in the photo album. We will also have 2 tests over the plants we collect and identify. We will spend appx. 2 weeks on this unit as well as work in/on our gardens and spread mulch.
There are only 30 days left of school .................................. Be prepared for anything as the weather changes our plans.

This week we will have a plant sale! So come one, come all. The plant sale will be everyday this week from 9-3. Please feel free to come when your student has class. They will be happy to show you around.
While the plant sale is going on .... we will working on and rotating a variety of group activites such as: designing the groups garden area, preparing the soil, working in the GH & delivering plants. Bring Lab shoes and be prepared for anything. If you are going to travel for Spring Break bring back a cool plant or some soil! Be safe, Ms H

The week ahead, the bell schedule has some changes in it this week due graduation testing. Mon & Wed are long classes for 2nd period and short for 3rd. Then Tues & Thursday are long classes for 3rd period and short for second. We will adjust class assignments as necessary. BUT THE SOIL QUIZ WILL BE ON TUESDAY and the PGP IS DUE ON WEDNESDAY 3-326................................
Monday we will review for a soils quiz on Tueday.

We have a busy week ahead! We are still on Chapter 6, Soils, Nutrients & Fertilizer. We will discuss nutients, complete the terms sheet I handed out last week. We will also learn about PH and complete a worksheet. This week is your 28 day observations on your PGP. That means we will be performing a cost analysis and potting up your plants . You should expect further information on the TYPE WRITTEN portion of your PGP toward the end of the week. You can also expect a quiz on soils the first part of next week. We are trying to wrap some topics up and get ready for a PLANT SALE before Spring Break!!!!

Our new unit will be studying Soils, Nutrients & Fertilizers. We will start with Chapter 6, reading the material & answering the review questions at the end of the chapter. We have several worksheets and notes to take on this material. Hopefully if the weather works with us we will be able to blend tools & saftey in with this and work outside in the garden!
Resumes & cover letters will no longer be accepted unles you have an excused absence. We have moved on from that assignment. Dead lines are REAL!

We have completed our propagation unit! We are still be working on our PGP, 14 day observations are on 3-5-08. We have sort of an odd week so this is what is ahead....
We will be creating a Resume. Students will receive a resume packet with a lot of information and a sample format. Students will turn in a TYPED rough draft on Wednesday (10 point bonus if you get it in on Tuesday). I will help with revisions. Students will make the revisions/corrections and turn that in for a grade. The resume is worth 50 points, the points WILL ONLY BE GIVEN ONCE THE REVISIONS ARE MADE AND TURNED IN. Hopefully, I will get them back and final clean copies will be due on Friday 3-7-08. If things change I will post in the classroom and on the BLOG. Please save your resume on your computer!!! If you take another Hort class you will use it again.
Tuesday is EARLY Release and Thursday there will be a Career Fair at Harrison. This could be a good way to get a head start on a summer job. Please email your reumes to me if you have computer/ printer problems. Let me know if you have any problems, Mrs. H

This week we will be reviewing for the Propagation TEST on Thursday. We have done a lot of things with our propagation unit from terms, reading the chapter & review questions , worksheet, group projects and lastly the PGP(personal growing project)! That is a lot of stuff!! We will pull it all together Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdday for a test on Thursday. Wednesday the 27 will also be our 7 day PGP observations. If weather permits we may begin equipment safety. Please study for the test and learn to apply your new found knowledge!! Please remember to have your research portion & photos completed before class on Wednesday! Each page is worth 10 pts so that is 30 pts total and you will not be able to propagate with out it.
We did most of the research on Thursday 2-14-08. Please wear closed toed shoes to work in the lab.

Monday we will begin our RESUME assignment. I will go over the things that need to be on everyones resume. I will hand out a packet and show many examples. Each student will create a resume. It will be due on MONDAY NOV 26! I will proof read them for errors. Then the resume will be handed back to the student for corrections. Once corrections are made and returmed to me will the student be given a grade. Your reume is a usefull tool and it is important that it is done correctly and without errors. So saveit! Save it! Save it! If you take another horticulture class you will need it again.
Tuesday Spices around the world! We will learn about different spices and where they come from. This is a perfect way to wrap things up for the holiday! If you travel somewhere over Thanksgiving please bring back a soil sample to add to our collection! Have a wonderfull & safe Thanksgiving, Mrs. H

I am surprised that my students do not know how to summrize a project or activites... Lots of room for improvement! This week will be studying soils. This is our last full week before Thanksgiving and we need to make the most out of it!

Monday we will have our second ID test. Please study! ID notebooks are also due on Monday, remember it is worth more than your ID test.
Tuesday we begin potting up your PGP. Each student will need to keep track of how many 6" or 10" pots you have from each crop. We will perform a cost analysis as a class and then each student must incorporate that information into their written PGP report. The PGP report is due NOV 8.
Wednesday we will have cookout, all students will sign up to bring something.
Thursday finish potting up PGP, cost analysis, review requirments (which are on the front page of the packet).
Friday will be a demonstration on a fall centerpeice arrangement.
Monday & Tuesday Nov 5 & 6 are a student holiday. PGP due NOV 8

We have been working hard on our Plant ID notebooks,EVERYONE should have brought them home this past weekend to study! We have an ID test on Monday!!!!!! Students understand they are given a blank sheet of paper and are to identify the samples that are held up. We have spent a great deal of time on this in class.
Tuesday & Wednesday we will collect the remaining plant samples on our lists.
Thursday we will mount the samples and have another ID test on Friday or Monday.
As we approach the end of the this unit, students will also turn in their ID notebooks for a grade (120pts.)

We are still working on plant ID. I was very disappointed in the number of students who did not have their photo album. We have talked about this for 9 weeks and it was on a supply list at the beginning of the semester as well as on this site in many locations. This week we begin Trees and plant Identification!! I love this part. Please come prepared this week with your PHOTO ALBUM. We will collect plant samples and write infromation about the plants while we are outside.
Later in the week we will mount the samples in the photo album. This is a lot of fun and fall is a wonderfull time of year to ID trees. We will spend about 2-21/2 weeks on this and yes there will be 2 ID tests. Please let me know if you need help, Mrs. H

We have spent along time on plant propagation. We have had group presentations,read chapter 5 answered the review questions, completed a worksheet and actually did your PGP (personal growing project)!! Now we need to pull it all together.
Monday we will review the chapter 5 work sheet and go over flash cards. We will also begin a review packet for the TEST on THURSDAY.
Tuesday complete review packet and review flash cards.
Wednesday will be a Gallery Tour review using any posters or handouts you/your group had for the presentations. This should also be your 7 day PGP observation.
Thursday = TEST please study
Friday hopefully work the gardens outside and go over the steps to bed prep. I do not know if we will be able to plant the gardens due to the drought condtions. Please let me know if you have any comment, concerns or need help with anything, Mrs. H

This week we go over our PGP!! Yea finally this is what everyone has been waiting for!! The PGP (personal growing project) is a fun project that we will work on for about one month. Each student will 3 crops/ 3 different types of plants. Each student will select plants for a list I provided or they may bring a plant from home or go to store and purchase a plant(s) to grow. We will make these selections Monday and research their propagation method Tuesday in the computer lab at school. We will begin propagating on Wednesday and finish Thursday.
We will make weekly observations to check onb the progress of the plants and pot up their project into larger contajiners in about 30 days. This is followed by a type written report on each crop. Each student recieved a PGP packet. However, for those of you who may need another it is available on this blog.
The PGP{ still falls under the propagation unit. So we still have a couple of worksheets and chapter review before we have a propagation test, next week. please continue to review flash cards and chapter 5 review questions.

Last week was a great sucess with test, review questions and Cd/Allbum cover review projects! Wow they were wonderful and creative! The week ahead looks like this:
Monday read chapter on Propagation and answer the review questions as always breifly write the questions. Hope fully we will have time to go over some tools in the green house.
Tuesday we will break up into groups, each group will have one propagation method to learn and present ot the class. I will work with each group and each group will also have some time in the Media Center. Students will need to use their wisely as these presentations will be presented Thursday of this week and finishing on Friday. Once we have accomplished this we will begin growing our PGP (personal growing project). You can expect a test on propagation the 3rd week in Sept.

Thursday: TEST, this will require you to THINK and APPLY what you have learned and what you know. It will challenge you I promise. PLEASE study, review notes, flash cards and anything that we colored!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are off to a good start! Last week we did introductions,went through the Horticulture Handbook and everyone has a text book, WOW!
We began our unit on carrers in Horticulture. Each student selected a career to research and went to career cruising.com for a career match maker quiz. We did the research in class on Friday. Each student will share the information they learned with the rest of the class on Monday.
We will read chapters 1 & 2 this week and answer the review questions and then discuss the chapter. We will also discuss the History & Symblosim of plants. We should wrap up the week with a video entilted The Private Life of Plants which has awesome photography and everyone shoudl enjoy.
Please get organized with your class notebooks. Students may start to bring in their supplies & materials this week.

Monday we wil have Lab Finals. Students will draw assignments out of stack. Each packet has instructions, there are 2 - 7 people to a team. The team accomplishes a given taks and receives a grade.
Tuesday if time permits we will finish watching Happy Feet to wrap up our al unit.
Wednesday general review and possible cook out.
Thursday 2 & 3 period finals, 1/2 day classes.

Thiis week we will continue with weather because it affects everything we do! We will also talk about the environment and our interactions with it. Hopefully, with alot of discussions. We will also walk the trail one day and pick up trash.Yes, we will have a class notebook check just to make sure everything is i n order for the final. Remember the reason we kept a class notebook was you were able to use it on the final exam.

We are still working on Plant ID notebooks/photo albums. We will collect and mount the remaining plants on Monday & Tuesday. Wednesday we will have the second ID test, only one ID test score will be entered into the grade book.This will you each student the opportunity to keep their first test score or improve the second one! ID notebooks/photo albums are due on Wednesday aslo, they are worth 120 pts.
This week we also have an Invent-A-Plant assiognment. Now you will have the chance to come up with your own plant. We will also have a MOTHER'S Day Plant Sale on Thursday & Friday. Last week we started collecting plant samples and mounting the sample in a photo ID album. MANY students do not have a photo album, you are behind.. The photo album was on a supply list at the beginning of the semester and posted on the blog. It should have 30 self adhereing pages, it will be a giant flash card to study for 2 ID tests. You can use an old notebook and purchase extra insert packages. All of the handouts from this unit go in there as well as the samples we have collected and will continue to collect. This notebook is worth 120 points!! Speaking of notebooks we will have another class notebook check VERY SOON worth 50 points. Your class notebook is your collection of class materials from the semester. It will make an excellent referance for you on the final exam.
This week we will aslo be PLANTING our gardens on Monday and Tuesday. Please be prepared to work and have the proper shoes! Wed & Thurs collecting plants and a ID test on Friday. Please take a walk with a friend and look at the trees in your subdivison, go to the park, say the plant names..... Let me know if I can help . Mrs H

Intro to Horticulture
Resumes & cover letters were due on Friday. Projects turned in Monday will be 1/2 credit and no projects will be accepted after Monday 4-24-07. Friday we also began a new unit on Plant ID. Each student has a partner to help collect samples. However, each student MUST complete their own information sheet while we are out in the feild collecting samples. EVERYONE needs to have their photo album! This was on a supply list and many of you have brought them in, thank you. Many students have not brought them in, please do so. We will spend 2 - 3 weeks on this and work on our personal seeding project and prepare our gardens. So we have a lot going on! Looks like we"ll be having another plant sale within the next 2 to 3 weeks as well! This is the home stretch. We all need to finish strong!! Please contact me if you have any problems. Monday we read chapter 6 Soils & Media we started a worksheet on Friday. After reading the chapter students write the objectives on page 122 and define them as well as complete the work sheet.
Tuesday we will begin our Resume Assignment. Each student will complete the packet and TYPE a resume and write a cover letter responding to a job (this part of the packet)
Students will turn in their RESUME, it will be given back for correction. ONCE the corrections have been made and returned to the teacher will a grade br given. RESUMES MUST BE CORRECTED TO RECEIVE A GRADE!

Insect & Disease tests have been graded and entered in I - Parent. There were many students absent on test day...The make up test day will be Wednesday at 3:30.Monday we will pot up your PGP! They plants will go in 6" or 10" contaioners. It is very impotant to keep track of how many of these end up with. Each student will take home 1 plant of each crop. Tuesday we will go through a cost analysis. This is what it cost to produce your crop and to see the potential profit ( of course that goes to the Hort. Dept.) This information is REQUIRED IN YOUR PGP WRITTEN PROJECT WHICH IS DUE THURSDAY MARCH 29. NO PGP WRITTEN PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER SPRING BREAK! If you have printer problems please let me know and your are welcome to email it to me. You must let me know if you do this, if not it will automatically get deleted by the Cobb Co. spam catcher. Tuesday is day 21 od your PGP. You can expect to do your PGP report and summary BEFORE Spring Break. That means you have research to do on your own, final observations and cost analysis will be done next week. You need to plan on PGP due on March 29
Weather permitting will gon on a bug hunt this week. We will also cover pesticide applications and chemical safety.Expect a test Thursday or Friday and a possible POP QUIZ any dasy this week!

We finished the group propagation project with varied sucess............ We are still covering Plant Propagtion which is chapter 5 in the text. You can expect a test Thursday or Friday of this week.
Friday 2-23 students recieved their PGP ( personal growing projects) this is what we have all been waiting for, TIME TO GROW SOME PLANTS!!!This packet is very important IT IS YOUR LAB GRADE when we finish this project.
Monday 2-26 we will research the student plant selections. If you do not finish you will need to do it for homework. NO student will propagate plants untill their research is complete.
Tuesday 2-27 check research and begin growing your PGP
Wednesday 2-28 continue to check research and grow your PGp
Thursday 3-1 wrap up loose ends on starting the PGP & REVEIW FOR PROPGAGTION TEST CHAP 5

We are finally moving on to a new unit! This week we will begin chapter 5 which is Plant Propagation, yea!
We will read the chapter on Monday and answer the review questions these are due at the beginning of class if you do not finish them in class on Monday. Pleae remember to briefly write the review questions and answers at the end of the chapter. Tuesday students will divided into groups for a group project. Each group will have one type of propagation method to research and present to the class. Each group will become and "expet" in their topic area. The each person in the group will have the same information packet. All students are expected to participate in the project. Each group will have a writen portion and presentation, visual aids such as hand outs, poster and or over heads are a GOOD idea. We will be working on this in class Wednesday and Thursday this week. We are completeing our unit on Basic Botany. We started with a brief description of Plant Evoultion then worked our way up a plant starting with the roots, stems, leaves,flowers and seeds. Friday Feb 2 students recieved a review project. The assignment is to create an album or CD cover relating to Basic Botany. I have copied the asignment and it should be attached to the extended entry. This project is due at the end of class on Monday Feb 5.
These will be presented to the class on Tuesday. We will review the chapter on Wednesday in prepartion for the TEST on THURSDAY.We we will flash cards in class each day. The test will consist of T/F, multiple choice, fill in the blak and short answer. You need to study! I have noticed many of you do not have your Horticulture notebooks .... therefor I will have a class notebook check this week. I have finished grading the PGP! They were very good overall. For those of you who choose not to do this and then decided to scramble........ please read you Horticulture Handbook on late work, for those of you were absent please check the Hort handbook and the school make policy in your H book.
We have 2 days this week and then a long awaited and needed break! Monday will focus on GA prodcuts and veiw and agriculture video on Harvesting.
Tuesday we will Taste, Touch, Smell and Feel Spices Around the world. This is fun esp. before Thanksgiving.
If you plan to travel over the hoilday please bring back some soil.
You do have HOMEWORK over the break and that is a RESUME and COVER LETTER that we went over last week.
You may turn it in early if you like or leave it in your mail box so it there when we get back. NO LATE RESUME PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Ample time has been allowed for this as the assignment was given out 11-15-06 and due 11-27-06.

This week we will working on your resume and a referance list. Each student will have a packet to complete and a hand written rough draft that will be done and due in class. Each student will type their final resume and refeance list. This is a professional working document. Please save this typed resume on a disc, flash drive or your hard drive you will need it. Students will also respond to job posting out the AJC. Please contact me if you need help. We also work on a Park Seed Order. This in class assignment is to create a mock order for supplies and materials related to Horticulture. There are guidelines and a budget.
