Week of Nov. 17

In GOVERNMENT this week, we'll finish up the CONSTITUTIONAL UNDERPINNINGS of our political system.

Our TEST on Tuesday will be open-note and you have been provided with a topical study guide to guide your note-taking. Remember - class notes will NOT be sufficient. You must prepare notes for yourself from the text using the study guide if you want to do really well on the test.

By FRIDAY of this week you should have read ALL of Chp.3, and over the Thanksgiving holidays you should read ALL of Chp.4. Of course, if you don't want to do that reading over the holidays, you might want to double-up and read it THIS WEEK. On the first day back from our break, you'll be quizzed on the main terms and topics of Chps.3 and 4.

NOTE: You will need to study and take notes on Chp.4 on your own. We will not be covering it in class. Use the topical study guide to direct your note-taking on this and the other chapters.

Week of November 3

In GOVERNMENT this week, we'll be continuing our discussion of the nature of government and the constitutional underpinnings of American government.

On Monday,we will discuss the various forms and types of government that man has created for himself. We will also talk about the final hours of the 2008 presidential election and see some television ads put together by the "minor party" candidates Bob Barr, Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney, and Ralph Nader.

HOMEWORK Mon. and Tues. 11/3-11/4 : Review all of Chp.1 and your class notes.

On Wednesday, students will use their textbooks to answer a series of study questions from chps.1 and 2.

HOMEWORK Wed. and Thurs. 11/5-11/6 : Study Chp.2, Sections 1 and 2

On Thursday, we will discuss in-depth four great documents of freedom : Magna Carta, the Petition of Right, the English Bill of Rights, and the American Declaration of Independence. We will also see Part 1 of the episode of the recent HBO miniseries "John Adams" entitled "Independence" (based on the writings of historian David McCullough).

Friday will be given over entirely to our discussion of the Declaration of Independence. We will also see the conclusion of the "John Adams" episode "Independence".

In closing, I must say that this has been a wonderful semester. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with such a fine group of young people. You may be leaving Harrison, but you will forever be in my thoughts and prayers! Congratulations and best wishes in your future endeavors!

In GOVERNMENT this week, we'll be discussing both CONGRESS (Mon.-Wed.) and THE PRESIDENCY (Thurs. - Fri., and Mon. of next week).

Study notes for each unit are provided below, but these are NOT the notes students will need to t ake in class. So pay attention!

Each day, we will also see a special film presentation, but only for a small portion of the period.

Monday through Wednesday, in conjunction with our discussion of CONGRESS, we'll see Frank Capra's classic film about one man's battle against corruption in our nation's capital, "MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON."

Thursday and Friday, accompanying our discussion of THE PRESIDENCY, students will see "THIRTEEN DAYS", starring Kevin Costner, about the October, 1962, Cuban Missile Crisis.

In Government, on Monday we'll be finishing up our discussion of elections with a close-up look at how we elect our presidents. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we'll focus on the Media and its influence on our politics. On Thursday, we'll have our TEST on voting, elections, and the media, and we'll move on to Congress on Friday.

Week of March 17th


In Government, this week, we will continue to introduce the course. We will discuss basic principles of government in general, and then focus more precisely on the Declaration of Independence.

Read and study all of Chp.1 and Chp.2 through the Declaration of Independence. Also, review your classnotes nightly.

We will have our first test, on Chp. 1 and the Declaration of Independence, on Monday, March 24th.

This week is going to wrap up our units on the three branches of government. Remember, your projects are due on Thursday. Mrs. Hale has posted several times before and after school this week for additional help, research, or computer needs: Monday p.m., Tuesday a.m. (7:40-8:20) and Wednesday (3:30-4:15). I will be available as well on Wednesday morning at 7:45 a.m. in room 814. If you need more help outside of these times, please let us know. Also, if you need another instruction sheet, I have placed them in the desk at the front of the room.

Monday: Finishing the 1st Amendment Freedoms (Chapter 13)
Tuesday: Civil Rights, Chapter 14 Sections 3-5
Wednesday: Civil Rights continued
Thursday: PROJECTS DUE and to be shared with the class

Week of December 3 - December 7


We are getting close to the end of the semester and one more unit to complete! I also want to update you on Mr. Lynn. He had his surgery last Tuesday and spent the rest of last week recovering in the hospital. His excellent doctors and nurses took great care of him and got him up walking very quickly. Immediately, he had more energy than he has had in a long time. He was released on Saturday and will continue his recovery at home.

This week:
Monday 12/3--We will be discussing the Powers of the Presidency in action. Look at Chapter 9 Section 1. The students also received a study guide for their TEST TOMORROW. If you were absent today, the study guide can be found at the end of this blog. Be prepared to take your test tomorrow upon your return.

Tuesday 12/4--EXECUTIVE BRANCH TEST

Wednesday 12/5--We will begin our final unit on the Judicial Branch. We will be discussing information found in Chapter 11 Sections 1-3 (Judicial Organization).

Thursday 12/6--We will be discussing Chapter 15 Sections 1-3 (History of Law and the Courts)

Friday 12/7--We will discuss the Supreme Court and the Freedoms found in Chapter 11 Section 3, Chapter 12 Sections 1 and 2, and Chapter 13 Sections 1-5. The students will receive a Supreme Court Brief Project that will be due Thursday 12/13.

We are on the home stretch to the end of the semester! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving Break!

This week, we will be talking about the Executive Branch. This unit lasts 6 days and our test will be next Tuesday! If you will be absent at any time this week, please see me or Mrs. Hale to get caught up as quickly as possible. Be sure to check the orange make-up work folder to get your notes and handouts that you may have missed. Also, make sure you are reviewing the topics we cover in class nightly. We are really picking up the pace through the rest of the semester!

Monday: Chapter 8 Section 1 and Chapter 9 Section 2 will be covered. For homework, finish your Roles of the President questions. This will be collected.

Tuesday: Chapter 8 Section 2 will be covered.

Drop-In and Welcome

Don't forget the drop-in that is scheduled for Mr. Lynn on November 16th between 7:45 a.m. - 8:15 a.m. Your presence will mean a great deal to him as he continues to recover from his car accident and prepares for his upcoming surgery.

At the same time, we'd like to welcome Mrs. Hale to our class. She's very excited about joining our class, and we're looking forward to having her with us the remainder of the semester.

This week in Government we will cover the founding documents of our nation - The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation, and The Constitution of the United States. It is safe to say that, over the next 5-10 schooldays, you will gain an understanding of what it means to be an American that you can carry with you through life.
