Pretty Good

Each day I watch students make decisions. Decisions not to cheat. Decisions to do the work. Decisions to skip school. Decisions to defy a teacher, or a parent. Decisions to help a friend. Decisions to recycle. Decisions to steal. Decisions to share.

I do not ask for perfection. NO! Rather, I want to encourage students to shun perfection, which is unreachable, and to embrace excellence instead. Many students are afraid of excellence. Afraid of working hard. Afraid of success. I've watched excellent people settle for becoming pretty good, and I think that is a pretty sad state of life. When I read this poem tonight, I found it very applicable.

"Pretty Good" by Charles Osgood, from the Osgood File, 1986

There once was a pretty good student
Who sat in a pretty good class
And was taught by a pretty good teacher
Who always let pretty good pass.

He wasn't teriffic at reading,
He wasn't a whiz-bang at math,
But for him, education was leading
Straight down a pretty good path.

He didn't find school too exciting,
But he wanted to do pretty well,
And he did have some trouble with writing,
Since nobody taught him to spell.

When doing arithmatic problems,
Pretty good was regarded as fine.
5+5 needen't always add up to be 10;
A pretty good answer was 9.

The pretty good class that he sat in
Was part of a pretty good school,
And the student was not an exception:
On the contrary, he was the rule.

The pretty good school that he went to
Was there in a pretty good town,
And nobody there seemed to notice
He could not tell a verb from a noun.

The pretty good student in fact was
Part of a pretty good mob.
And the first time he knew what he lacked was
When he looked for a pretty good job.

It was then, when he sought a position,
He discovered that life could be tough,
And he soon had a sneaking suspicion
Pretty good might not be good enough.

The pretty good town in our story
Was part of a pretty good state
Which had pretty good asiprations
And prayed for a pretty good fate.

There once was a pretty good nation
Pretty proud of the greatness it had,
Which learned much too late,
If you want to be great,
Pretty good, is, in fact, pretty bad.

These presents need to be gift-wrapped please!

Thank you for giving of your time and resources to help others!

Kashuan wants:
Racetrack

V-Tech Laptop (we could all pitch in some money to get him this, depending on how expensive they are. I don't know)

Kashuan wears: Size 8-10 pants (child) and medium shirt size

Kahlil wants:
Transformers
Black spider man
Hand held video game
Remote control car

Kahlil wears: Sixe 12-14 Boys pants and medium or large shirts

Canned Food Drive!

Homeroomies!

We are collecting cans until October 26 for MUST Ministries. They give away 2,000 cans a DAY! Let's see if we can help them replenish their coffers for the holidays. The homeroom who brings in teh most cans wins a free breakfast! YUM!

We've been doing better in school participation- entering the banner competition, bringing in supplies for the Military- but I think that we need to put ourselves in the running for the best Harrison Homeroom. The only way to do that, is to participate!! Bring in your cans!!!

October 10, 2007

FYI

Next Wednesday, October 17 the PSAT test will be given during an extended homeroom.

The schedule for the day is as follows:

Welcome Back

Homeroomies!

Welcome back to the 2007-2008 school year! I know this, your sophomore year, will be the best year yet. We now will be located in room 109 on the English hallway, so don't head back to our old stomping ground. We've moved up in the world!

In homeroom on the first day of school you will recieve your schedule, your H-book, and an informational packet to take home to your parents. There are some materials in that packet that MUST be signed and returned to school. Be sure to pay attention to return dates, required papers, etc. We will go over this in homeroom, so this is just a reminder.

Can't wait to see each of your smiling faces!

Cheers,
Ms. Dobbs
