The test went well for every student last Thursday over exponents. After Labor Day, we will be spending Tuesday, September 2nd continuing a cumulative review that we started over all of chapters 1-8. We are beginning the next unit over quadratics, which will involve factoring, taking square roots, discriminants, and quadratic formula. This unit will take approximately two weeks. The test is tentatively set for Thursday, September 11th. God bless our country.
------------------------
Last week, we worked on notebook checks, completing tasks 5 and 7, took a quiz on sets of numbers, and 3 properties. We took 2 simple assessments on exponents. This week, we will be taking the quiz again on 3 properties and sets of numbers, but it will also include perfect squares from 0-100. This week we will be discussing exponential growth and decay, scientific notation, then testing on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday, we will be having a review over all of Integrated I plus the exponents chapter.
------------------------
Integrated II will be taking a pretest this week and begining a review of Integrated I. Fortunately, this is a very small group of students again and we should be able to provide much individualized attention. Welcome back everyone!
The functions test was postponed until Friday, August 29th, which allowed an extra day of review. After Labor Day, we will begin working on our next unit over rates of change and slopes. The plan over the next two weeks is to incorporate a little bit of basic skills review into each class for about 30 minutes or so at least. There will be a classwork assignment out of the text book each day and a homework assignment on Tuesday through Thursday next week and Monday through Friday the week after. After the first section and test, I have seen that there are many basic skills that we need to practice. There will never be a homework assignment over something that has not been taught in class or reviewed. In addition to the 30 minutes of skills review, we are still needing to begin our next unit on slopes. Here is the plan as of now:
Tuesday, September 2
Functions, graphs and domains
CW P. 11 (1-5), P. 13 (1-14), P. 14 (15-20)
HW P. 15-16 (1-19)
Wednesday, September 3
x-intercepts, y-intercepts
CW P. 19 (1-27)
HW P. 21 (1-27)
Thursday, September 4
Slopes of a line
CW P. 25 (1-27)
HW P. 27-28 (1-27)
Friday, September 5
Evaluating Functions
CW P. 41 (1-32) Left Column
Monday, September 8
Absolute Value Functions
CW P. 53 (1-15)
HW P. 54 (1-15)
Tuesday, September 9
Quadratic Functions
CW P. 100-101 (1-23) odds
HW P. 102 (1-23) odds
Please be sure to get a Pinnacle Grade Viewer account if you don't already so that you can keep track of grades. Your student can and should also get his or her own account. We want them to take responsibility for monitoring their progress and areas of weakness. There are some people who are doing an excellent job in the support class on all the smaller grades, but are not passing the Math I class due to their test score.
If you are ever absent for a test, be sure to bring an admit slip to show that your absence is excused. Then, you are to arrange to make up your test during a math make-up session before or after school. If absences are not excused, students are allowed to make up the work, but it will not count in the grade.
---------------------
This week we will be doing a review of function families. There will be a quiz Monday over maximum and minimum with x-intercepts and y-intercepts. We will also be working more with domain and range, especially with certain functions involving square roots. The test will be on Thursday.
---------------------------------------------------------------
This week, we are finishing the Fiona task (function word problems) and turning in all except task #6. Throughout the week, we will be studying further the 6 different parent graphs and the equations that go with them. WE will be analyzing the maximum, minimum, intervals of increase, intervals of decrease, and end behavior. Also, we will be assessing the basic properties (commutative, associative, and distributive), the sets of numbers (whole numbers, counting numbers, integers, rational, irrational & real numbers). Be ready to recall by memory quickly the square numbers at least up to 100. This list would be :
0, 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100
This class is doing a great job!

Welcome to Harrison High School! Math I will be working on functions in the first unit, which should last for approximately two and a half to three weeks. This week, students will be taking a pre-test and also working on the first performance task of the semester called "Exploring Functions with Fiona". There will not be any homework for the first week of school.

Welcome back everyone! We are in trailer 13 now, which is on the same side of the building as last year, but further back. If you didn't come to fall madness, you might not know that last year's trailer was removed (as well as a few others). At least there are enough desks for everyone this year and we have a little bit larger room. Hurray! We lost just a few people and gained a few new students too in our advisement group. I know you guys are great and will make them feel welcome and I look forward to seeing everyone next week! Hope you had a great summer.
