Welcome to World Languages! In our department, we strive to foster proficiency in languages other than English in order to help students communicate and connect successfully with other cultures, both in their own community and abroad. With that in mind, we are pleased to offer French, Latin, and Spanish from the beginning level through the AP (Advanced Placement) level.
As many of you know, competitive colleges and universities expect students applying for admission to have a minimum of two consecutive years of study of a foreign language. However, they highly recommend that students have more than two years of study of the same language in order to strengthen their college application. Our language programs are designed for students to be able to achieve this and more.
In each of the three languages, courses are a semester long. Students who enter high school with French I or Spanish I completed in the middle school program can take the second level of the same language as freshmen and advance to the third level as sophomores. After level III in Latin and level IV in French or Spanish, students can go in a couple of directions with their studies; some choose to take the AP path which culminates with the AP test every May, whereas others may choose to take advanced level courses that provide extra exposure to the culture(s) being studied and more practice developing their language ability. Some students find that they enjoy learning one new language so much that they decide to study another one as well!
In addition, our department supports students in a wide array of extracurricular opportunities such as:
- Language clubs
- Honor societies
- Immersion camps
- Local, state and national conventions
- National Exams
- Governor's Honors Program
